As is well known, every wine is strongly linked to the territory in which it is born. The link is not only limited to the soil and typology of land, but also to the local micro-climate, to local wine tradition, to man’s labors and to the radicated culture and history of the place. This is called the “terroir“. To know and appreciate even the wines from Trecciano, it is important to study the context in which they are produced.

The Trecciano Estate is located on the Southern slopes of the Montagnola Senese, a particular hilly area between Casole d’Elsa (West), Monteriggioni (North), Siena (East) and Sovicille (South). The vegetation is characterized by the presence of a thick forests of leach trees, oak trees, maple and chestnut trees. The limestone soil and subsoil are rich with marble, including the famous yellow marble that has been used since the 13th century in the construction of many churches in the area, including in the Florence and Orvieto Cathedrals. The climate of the area is temperate, with hot-wet summers and cool-wet winters.

From the historical and cultural point of view, the territory of the Montagnola was a passage of the ancient Via Francigena, which united northern Europe with Rome. In the surroundings of the Trecciano Estate, it is possible to witness this historic testimony in the splendid Pieve di Ponte allo Spino, built in limestone around 1050. Located only a few kilometers from Trecciano, there are numerous medieval castles (Montarrenti, Radi) and Baroque villas (Ville Lechner, Villa Celsa, Villa Cetinale).

Even the closest town to the estate, Sovicille, is located only 10 km from Siena, has ancient origins. Sovicille’s name appears to come from the Latin words “Suavis locus ille”. This means “that sweet place”, and has an elliptical shape, as a testimony to its Etruscan origin. Between the 12th and 13th centuries various churches, tower-houses (Palovic of Sovicille and Palazzaccio di Toiano) and mills were built.

For those who want to immerse themselves in history, culture and landscape of the Chianti Senese, Tenuta di Trecciano can be a great starting point, or a stop along your journey. We are waiting for you!
